Skye First Birthday Party Dress from One Small Child

Have you seen this adorable first birthday party dress? Our Skye dress has all the details a girl could want! Perfect for your little princess’ special day!

Skye First Birthday Party Dress

All About the Skye…

The sleeveless underdress is made from aqua blue dupioni silk. It offers a simple backdrop to allow all the details of the over-dress to shine. For a little background info, dupioni silk is a subtly textured fabric. It’s woven from a double strand of silk yarn in a plain weave pattern. The yarn is uneven and varies in width, creating a series of natural horizontal “slubs”, which make up the unique character of the fabric. We can’t get enough of this deep, rich color!

The over-dress is a classy tea-length style that ends below the knee on most. It’s made from embroidered lace netting. Three rows of pretty embroidered flowers decorate the skirt. Dainty lace cutouts allow the vibrant aqua silk to shine through. The hem is finished with raw-edge netting. Puffed sleeves and a silk ribbon sash add pretty design elements. A hand-made silk rosette is placed off-center at the waistline. Silk-covered buttons back closures.

Accessorize her First Birthday Party Dress…

Finish her celebratory look with the Skye shoes! Made from the same rich aqua silk and embroidered lace, they’ll match her dress flawlessly. We also recommend our Shorty Slip and Bloomers set. Made from a soft cotton broadcloth, this slip is designed for comfort! Don’t forget to add a pretty headband to top it all off. Your little princess is all set to steal the show on her special day!

Sentimental LDS Blessing Ideas - One Small Child

Sentimental LDS Blessing Ideas

Your little one’s blessing day is a sacred event to look forward to. Their name will be officially added to church records and they have the opportunity of receiving a special priesthood blessing. What a special day! Today, we’d like to share some LDS blessing ideas to make your baby’s day extra sentimental.

Sentimental LDS Blessing Ideas

-Dress your little one in a sentimental outfit. There are so many ideas for this! You can make (or have someone make) a blessing dress for your little girl out of your wedding dress. Dress them in your blessing dress or your husband’s blessing outfit. Use an heirloom blanket. That gorgeous knitted blanket that your grandmother made would make a sentimental addition to your little one’s outfit.

-Start a tradition. Use the same blessing dress for all your daughters. Have each one’s initials embroidered on the skirt hem. You could also use this idea with a blanket. What an amazing heirloom to pass down to future generations!

-Host a luncheon or dinner. Take advantage of all your family being in town and get together after church for some food and reminiscing.

-Take some special pictures. You will want good photographs! Capture their little features and special elements of the day. Many mothers now are opting for a professional photo session of baby in their outfit before or after the event. We love that idea, but don’t miss out on the opportunity to snap a few photos on the day of as well. You’ll want one of daddy holding your little one, all the men in their suits, etc.

-Write a letter to your little one. Jot down some excerpts from the blessing. You don’t need to write down the entire blessing, but maybe a few things that stood out to you. Journal about other special parts of the day, like when your he smiled and cooed in your grandmother’s arms. Your little one will love reading about their special day years down the road.

-Make a blessing day memory mini-book. You could include pictures, information about the ward (who your bishop is, what ward and which stake it belongs to, who the stake president is, which ward building you attend, etc.) the names of the brethren who stood in the circle, some excerpts from the blessing, your feelings as a mother about the special day.

What have you done to make your little one’s blessing more meaningful? Share your LDS blessing ideas in the comments below.

LDS Blessing Day: Tips and Tricks for a Smooth Event

Is there an LDS Blessing Day coming up for your little one? Here are some tips and tricks to help keep your day smooth and stress-free. It’s all about making special memories!

LDS Blessing Day Tips and Tricks

-Plan a time to take pictures and schedule a photo session. Moms never regret any efforts or money spent on good pictures. Make a plan to capture a couple special memories. Ask someone in advance to take a couple snapshots for your family so everyone can be in the picture. Plan to take a family photo in the foyer after baby is dressed, and before the meeting begins. This is the perfect time to capture your family while everyone’s looking their best. Another great photo you’ll love is one will all the men holding your little one. Ask them ahead of time to gather before or after Sacrament meeting for a quick snapshot. We also recommend doing a professional photo shoot of your little one in their blessing outfit after their special day.

-Pack everything the night before. Especially if you have 9am church! Gather baby’s outfit and accessories, pack the diaper bag, round up anything you’ll need for yourself and older children (snacks, quiet activities for sacrament meeting, etc.). Set out outfits and take baths the night before. This ensures that nothing will be forgotten, and you won’t be scrambling to find a missing shoe 5 minutes before you’re supposed to leave.

-Consider dressing baby at the church. Especially girls! With some dresses, there’s no way you’ll be able to buckle the car seat around all the ruffles and bulk. Baby will be more comfortable traveling in her footed sleeper anyways. Take advantage of the mother’s room and dress her there. A few quiet minutes together can turn into a very special memory. Just be sure to arrive early enough that you have plenty of extra time. It will be more stressful if you’re rushed.

-Don’t forget a blanket. Babies are happier when they’re snuggly warm. A beautiful white blanket will compliment her pretty dress. She’ll be all smiles if she’s comfortable. If your little one is used to taking a pacifier, make sure to pack one.

-Make a plan to preserve the outfit. Babies are natural stain machines. Extra care will need to be taken with any special occasion outfit. If you plan to leave baby in the outfit for the entire block, you may want to purchase a pretty bib to protect it. Plan a quick diaper change before Sunday school. After the event day, properly clean the blessing outfit (following the instructions on the care and content label) before preserving it. Whether it’s framed, stored in a special chest or a garment bag, it will need to be cleaned before hand.

We hope you found these tips and tricks useful. We wish you a wonderful, special day.

Christening Customer Highlight - One Small Child

One Small Child Customer Highlight: Miss Taylor in our Memory Christening Gown

We are delighted to share Miss Taylor’s Christening today. This precious little lady is stunning in our Memory Lace Christening Gown. Doesn’t she look divine?

How did you find One Small Child?

I was searching the internet for a unique and elegant dress that would be suitable for passing on as an heirloom one day. One Small Child was at the top of all my search lists.

Was the purchasing simple and hassle-free?

I was pleasantly shocked to find out that the company is based in Blackfoot, Idaho–within an hour away from my home! I had the rare treat of going to visit in person and picking out the Memory gown and all of its accessories. The customer service was amazing, especially considering that I came without calling first. They sent me home with everything except the things I asked to have embroidered, which arrived by mail two days later!

What did you look for in a photographer?

I opted for a photo session rather than professional pictures at the blessing. My photographer was very in tune with the fact that I prefer classic portraiture over babies wrapped in fabric, in baskets, with flowers, etc. I wanted someone who had the special knack for bringing out the person behind a face. I’m highly satisfied with the results! Her name is Leah Stallings, and she can be found at LeahStallings.com.

What images of your event were important for you to capture?

Family is paramount to me and in my religion. Most ceremonies are performed by male relatives instead of, or in addition to church leaders. And due to the physical limitations of some family members, we were given permission to gather at home rather than the chapel.

The living room was surrounded by windows and full of light as my new daughter’s uncles, grandfathers, and others, all dressed in Sunday suits, formed a ring around her and supported her weight in their joined hands. My husband spoke the words to announce her name before the church, and bless her with a happy, purposeful life and many things unique to her blossoming personality.

What was the planning process like for your little one’s big day?

My dear sister-in-law offered her home for the event, and ordered flowers and refreshments besides. Not having to plan gave me more time to play dress-up with my daughter. 🙂

What did you want it to feel like/theme to be?

We didn’t want a big party, just time to be with our near and dear ones. It was small but formal, peaceful but happy. There were four generations of family gathered together that day. Some may not live long enough for Baby to remember, but now she will know they were there, and that they loved her.

Did you provide a meal to friends and family afterwards?

There were homemade desserts provided. We gathered in the rather large kitchen and talked for an hour or two.

Was there a particular moment that was memorable on that day aside from the event itself?

I was quite content to watch others cuddle the tiny object of our mass adoration. This child was born to be a true lady, and dressed to match. She politely smiled or cooed as occasion called for, with her hands folded over her delicate lace shawl, and her long gown cascading over laps and arms by turns. I was glad the outfit was comfortable enough that she never fussed at all. The Memory gown was ideally suited to match the sweet, sacred nature of our wonderful day!

one small child customer highlight

Are you going to preserve and/or frame your babies’ gowns?

The embroidered bib will be framed for Baby to have when she is older. The dress will be used as often as it is needed, hopefully for generations to come. The slip was embroidered with her monogram, and to it will be added the initials of future wearers.

Looking back, was there anything you would do differently?

No. I believe that God keeps our needs and wants in mind. We had actually ordered a different dress before we found One Small Child, but the order could not be completed, and I feel that I was being lead to find a dress that would satisfy my desires for my child in every way. As a heavenly parent, he knows my darling girl is worth celebrating too!
