Miss Lauren Communion Dresses - One Small Child

May Flowers: Miss Lauren First Communion Dress

After all it is Communion season, but at the same time it’s also May Flower season! So I wanted to highlight the two together by showcasing our dresses with a theme of May Flowers: Miss Lauren First Communion Dress. This is such an important time in a young girl’s life and you want her to be showcased beautifully. A dress is a great way to showcase her personality. The Miss Lauren is great for sweet girls that want something with a little flow when she walks and a pouffy skirt.

We love the simple lines we created with this dress and how the skirt is just the right amount of pouf for her to have a beautiful gown. Some events in life require a more understated gown and this one is perfect for those occasions with just a touch of flare, with another bow in the back at the belted waistline.

Miss Lauren

To order this darling First Communion dress for your little Miss’ big day, or for anything she needs a simple white dress for, go here for the Miss Lauren.

The Miss Lauren is a simple and elegant, 100% polyester taffeta A-line dress that is perfectly dress-up with out being too fussy. Featuring a dainty cap sleeve, scoop neckline and a draped bow at the waist with a flower detail perfect for May Day. With a fabric belt it helps give a feminine waist that is age appropriate. Zipper closure in back, made in the USA.

Accessories to add can include a Dew Drop Veil, a White Rosary, and Satin Mary Jane shoes. These items add a finishing touch to her attire of the day and help her to feel extra special.

Mother Child Pearl Bracelet 3433 - One Small Child

Mom and Daughter Pearl Bracelet Set

As moms, we love to be spoiled by our little ones on Mother’s Day. Breakfast in bed with maybe an eggshell or two, cuddles, and a homemade card. But asking for gifts for something we love so very much is not something we do. But what if it was for something sentimental and a keepsake? Perfect for Mother’s Day: Mom and Daughter Pearl Bracelet Sets are a great way to share something sweet and simple with your little girl that will last over time. Then someday, she can pass it down to her little girl. But this gift could also be for a goddaughter, niece, or any little girl that is special in your life. They could even be used for a flower girl! The possibilities are endless for something that is timeless and meaningful.

I remember those simple gifts over the years at memorable events that really made a difference for me. Things that I want my daughters to be able to see/use and know that I love them so much that I want them to enjoy something that I hold so dear to me. Those small glimpses in their memories will last forever and be a wonderful connection we’ll have through the years, even after they’re grown up.

Find the bracelets here for purchase.

These bracelets are made of freshwater pearls, and a sterling silver closure, and are made right here in the USA. If you have more than one little princess, you have the option to order more to go on everyone’s wrists. If this darling gift is for a Christening or Baptism we offer the ability to attach a cross charm as well. Mom and Daughter Pearl Bracelet Sets are a great start to traditions as well as one to begin even if they are not so little.

Decorative clover leaves over white background - One Small Child

My St. Patrick’s Day Tradition

Decorative clover leaves over white background

Growing up I knew what our St. Patrick’s Day tradition was. There would be green everywhere I turned. Green decor, green milk, green biscuits at dinner and of course green clothes. But something that never happened on St. Patrick’s Day was my mother wearing green. Ever.

My mother is half Irish and just so happens to have green eyes. (Being adopted that never was an excuse I could use). She took great pride in trying to keep up Irish traditions even though her mother died when she was 16 and her father just after she enlisted in Vietnam as a nurse. Her source for family traditions was gone so early in her life that she kind of had to improvise and come up with something new to make the holiday fun for the kids.

Every year she would prepare breakfast with as many items she could put green food coloring in. When I would come home from school I could always smell the Corned Beef and Cabbage cooking. Do I like Corned Beef and Cabbage? Not even close, but the taste and smell will always bring me back to my mom. She served it with vinegar, green biscuits many years and sweet iced tea, being that not only was she half Irish, but she was also from the South. There is just something special about the nostalgia that comes from sitting down to a meal you’ve had so many times over.

But there is also something exciting that comes from changing those traditions just a little and making it into something new with your own family. I love to cook to celebrate holidays, like my mom, and always look for something new and fun to try. The best kinds of recipes are the ones the littles can help with because you can talk while you cook, teach them a skill and get a wonderful treat out of it!

One of my favorite places to get recipe ideas is the blog Oh So Delicioso. They have several recipes for St. Patrick’s Day but by my favorite is the Neon Green Punch since I have small children that love the color! Electric green is a head turner and since it’s not too sweet I don’t have to worry about giving a second glass to my kids. Another one of my favorite sites for recipes is Weelicious as well (you can see the natural green recipes here).

I have found that with modern traditions, it’s not necessarily about having the exact same thing each year but that you do something each year so your kids know about the holiday and what fun you can have with it. My kids are all preschool age and younger so the big school parties won’t happen until this coming fall. Until then we have the opportunity to make each holiday unique to us and what we love.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Mom Talk: Meet Jamie Findlay

Mom Talk

-Tell us a little about your family and why it is special?

My oldest, Kayden, is 10. He’s amazingly talented at sports and is into wrestling and basketball currently. He’s also my most sensitive, requiring the most attention and consoling. He is an amazing student and recently got nominated for national awards for both his academic leadership and talents in art.

Kyler is 8, was recently baptized and is obsessed with sharing the gospel. He is fearless, quick to forgive and sometimes tactless in his truth telling. He came out the womb singing and hasn’t stopped. He speaks his mind sometimes too often and has us always laughing at the absurdities he thinks of.  He is also a great big brother and a darn good wrestler.

Kashton is 4 and the funniest kid you’ll ever meet. He is so aware of everything around him and comes up with the funniest observations. He once told me that it “smelt dangerous outside”. He’s a busy body, loves to Facetime anyone who answers my phone {I’m sorry to those of you who get these calls all the time} and is super independent. He’s also an electronic genius and can maneuver a phone or iPad faster than anyone I know.

Channing is my baby girl… my sweet sweet, desperately loved little girl. I questioned my sanity in wanting a 4th when she first arrived {3 months of constant crying}. She has turned into such a happy baby, though. She is constantly smiling and goes with the flow of anything we do. She has her mom’s curse though, and never sits still. Even while cuddling her little feet will roll around in circles. She’s almost 8 months and is just learning to crawl, heaven help me.

-What do you do for work/volunteer outside of being a wife and mom?

In addition to being a mom of 4 beautiful humans I have been in the fashion industry for over 5 years, and am currently a professional photographer based out of Eastern Idaho. I thrive on building business. After nearly 15 years of being a business owner it has become an obsession. I hate the phrase “serial entrepreneur” but it really defines who I am. I love combining what I learned from one business into the next idea or passion I find. The list of things I love and want to do is endless.  All of my children have grown up with me working from home and I don’t think any of us would know what to do if I didn’t. Being a working mother makes me a better mom. My me time is work.

That being said, being a working mom can sometimes take a toll. As we all know, being a mom is a 24 hour job all by itself. Trying to work is usually classified by sporadic minutes here or there {all day long}… followed by late nights and early mornings. I have to choose to be diligent in blocking out time that is for work only, and time that is for kids only… but more often than not my work time is taken over by kid time. Who can say no to those faces begging for mom? Priorities, right?

The older my kids get the busier life seems to become. Each kid is so very different, with interests and needs all their own. They each have unique qualities that make them special and OH so loved.

-Is there something your family does on a regular basis for quality time?

I have been very blessed with a family who truly love to be together. We all love doing the same things which makes it so much easier to plan. My entire family is obsessed with traveling.  We all thrive on experiencing new things together and are a bunch of adventure junkies. We plan a few trips a year, and are currently working on seeing all of the LDS temples in the United States. My boys are also big into trapping and hunting, and no I don’t do that with them… GROSS!  No walk is complete without noticing every animal track we pass and that is the extent of my involvement with that. We love the outdoors and spend a lot of time just being together outside. We ride bikes and walk nearly daily. But our go to activity is ice cream and movies. We spend a lot of time cuddled in our {now too small for 6 people} bed watching movies and cuddling.

-How do you take time for yourself to recharge?

Beth asked me to share what I do to take time for myself and I had to really think… what is this “Time for self” thing she’s talking about? I work! Truly though, its something  all us moms need. I enjoy so many things that I just don’t have enough time for, but things that I try to fit in and really help me tune in are: dancing, reading and photography. If I lived closer to the ocean that would have been my answer. Nothing calms me more than spending time near water. My favorite go to pick me up is turning off my computer and making my kids giggle. Baby laughs lift a soul like nothing else can.

-What is your go to, never fail and in a pinch recipe?

I don’t cook! Go to recipe… Go to… Go to… Papa Murphies Pizza? Although I do make a mean Cinnamon Roll like once a year.

-What is the one product you can not live without?

Favorite products totally depend on the context of the product… Clothing? Beauty? Kids? I am a product junkie and have shelves full of things that look cool and don’t get used. A few items that never stay in stock though: Moroccan Oil for my hair, and Mary Kay Oil Free Hydrating Gel for my skin. And if I do happen to cook I actually do use my Stoneware from Pampered Chef for non-meal items like the cookies I eat daily and shouldn’t.

Mom Talk Monday: Cherlyn Jenkins

-Tell us a little about your family and why it is special?

My family is special for many reasons. We are blended and trans-racial family. My husband had 1 daughter and twin boys when we married. One year and 10 months after we married we adopted our our next son and 15 months later were able to add our youngest son through adoption. My husband and his children are African American and our sons and I are Caucasian. Whenever I think of our family, I think of a quote by Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a dream that one day . . . little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” That is our family.

-What do you do for work/volunteer outside of being a wife and mom?

I was a school teacher for 20 years and quit my job when my boys were 1 and 8 months old to start my own company. I designed a coat that is safe to be worn with a car seat. It is called the Cozywoggle. (They are currently available online here.) I have been in business for almost 3 years now and it has been a wild and amazing ride.

-Is there something your family does on a regular basis for quality time?

We have quite an age spread in our family. Our oldest is 18 and our youngest is 3. Our family’s favorite activity is to spend time at the beach when the weather is good. We also love visiting the monuments and museums at the nations capitol together.

-How do you take time for yourself to recharge?

For me it is very challenging to find time to recharge myself but I am realizing the need for me to do so more every day. I am really drawn to yoga and am finding that practicing is really bringing balance and calm into my life. I also LOVE the occasional night out with girl friends.

-What is your go to, never fail and in a pinch recipe?

Crock pot chicken tacos!

-5 or 6 Chicken breasts

-One jar of salsa

-1 packet of taco seasoning

Put everything in the crock pot on low for 6-8 hours. When it is done cooking, stir and the chicken will shred. Delicious. I freeze the leftovers for enchiladas and taco soup.

-What is the one product you can not live without?

My crock pot and my Deep Dish Covered Baker. They both make for easy dinners which are important for me.

Celebrity Christenings Prince William - One Small Child

Royal and Celebrity Christenings we Love!

We all have a love for anything to do with the Royal family, especially the adorable Prince George. Today we want to highlight Royal and Celebrity Christenings we love because we can’t get enough of babies in amazing gowns.

Prince George’s Christening gown was actually a handmade replica of the original Royal Christening gown that was used from 1841 until 2004 for all of the Royal family’s Christenings. The Queen finally had it retired and preserved 11 years ago due to age. What an amazing heirloom! (Source) I can only imagine the stunning gown in person with that kind of history.

After retiring the gown, the Queen commissioned a new gown to replica the original to be used for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The amazing lace details are swoon worthy!

Another one of our favorites is this baptism dress for Rachel Griffiths baby girl back in 2009 that was made in 1920 by her great-grandmother. We love the simple color underneath with the darling over sized headband. Again, we love heirloom pieces that become a family tradition.

And finally, from December 2013, Fergie and Josh Duhamel’s baby Axl’s baptism day! We love the little suit with the personal, modern touch of the high top sneakers. Sweet accents like this are fun and unexpected so they add surprise to the baby’s big day for everyone to see.
